How to read this prototype

Clarity before certainty.

Demonstration data — not official Afrobarometer findings. The interface is production-shaped; the values are deterministic synthetic distributions built to test the full replacement, analysis, and export path safely.

Four reading principles

The same rules govern the story, explorer, comparison, profiles, search results, and every export.

Keep provenance visible

Every synthetic observation carries its data status, source, denominator, weighted sample size, and an explicit note. The demonstration banner stays present across every route.

Preserve full distributions

Headline shares are calculated from defined favourable or unfavourable response categories. Neutral, refused, and “don’t know” responses remain available in distributions and tables.

Let metadata drive controls

Geographies, rounds, response order, available charts, and demographic dimensions are derived from normalized metadata rather than embedded in interface logic.

Offer an equivalent table

Every visual selection can be reached as a semantic data table with exact values, units, rank, sample size, and status for keyboard and assistive-technology users.

From source file to public view

The import boundary accepts CSV, JSON, and Excel, validates the release, then exposes the same normalized contract to the API and interface.

    Validate

    Required fields, duplicate keys, geography codes, percentages, categories, and metadata completeness.

  2. 02

    Normalize

    Themes, questions, responses, geographies, rounds, demographics, observations, sources, and annotations.

  3. 03

    Aggregate

    Regional and Africa-wide values are derived using supplied weights and retain their release provenance.

  4. 04

    Publish

    Typed API responses power maps, charts, tables, profiles, search, links, and downloadable exports.

Demonstration coverage

Availability in the controls is computed from indicator metadata, so official releases can be partial without exposing invalid combinations.

Accessibility and motion

Native controls, visible focus, semantic structure, non-colour cues, keyboard-operable maps, chart descriptions, and table equivalents are part of the product—not a final compliance pass.

Motion communicates continuity when filters reorder countries or rounds change. It stays under 600ms, never delays access to content, and collapses to instant or near-instant state changes when the operating system requests reduced motion.
